Prague at Christmas: The Luxury Version
Prague at Christmas is pretty magical at the best of times… but if you’re going to do it, I say do it properly!
There’s something particularly lovely about Prague in winter. The beautiful old buildings, cobbled streets, Christmas lights and markets make it feel properly festive, but it’s also a city that lends itself brilliantly to a more luxurious city break.
For me, the luxury version isn’t necessarily about everything being flashy. It’s about choosing the right hotel, knowing where to escape the crowds, booking a few experiences that are genuinely worth doing and… of course eating and drinking very well.
Here are a few things I’d have on my list.
Stay somewhere special
Where you stay can make such a difference to a city break, particularly somewhere as atmospheric as Prague.
There are some gorgeous hotels to choose from, whether you want something traditional and elegant or something a little more contemporary.
The Grand Mark Prague is a beautiful choice if you want classic five-star luxury in a central location, while W Prague brings a much more modern feel and is a good option if you like your luxury with a bit more personality.
Then there’s Augustine, tucked away in the Lesser Town. It has a very different feel again and is housed within a former monastery, so you get that sense of history and character that makes Prague such a special city.
The trick is finding the right hotel for how you actually want to experience the city.
Soak up the Christmas atmosphere
Of course, you can’t come to Prague at Christmas without experiencing the festive side of the city.
The Christmas markets are a big part of the appeal, with the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square among the best-known spots. But I wouldn’t make the markets the whole trip.
Part of the fun is simply wandering. Take your time, look up at the architecture, stop for a hot drink and let yourself get a little bit lost. And if you want to make the experience feel even more special, consider visiting later in the day when the city is lit up and the atmosphere changes completely.
Escape the crowds
Prague can get busy, particularly around the main sights and Christmas markets, so it’s worth knowing where to disappear to for a while.
Waldstein Gardens are a lovely quieter corner of the city and a good escape from the busier streets.
You can also seek out some of the smaller streets and waterways around Kampa and Little Venice, where things feel much more peaceful than around the main tourist sights.
This is one of those things I think makes a difference to a luxury city break. You don't necessarily want every minute planned. sometimes the luxury is simply having somewhere beautiful and quiet to escape to.
Book the right experiences
There’s so much to see in Prague that it can be tempting to try and do everything.
I’d rather choose a couple of experiences that make the trip memorable.
The Strahov Monastery Library is a beautiful example. The historic library itself is spectacular, and if you can catch an evening concert there, even better.
A private evening sightseeing tour is another option I really like. Seeing Prague after dark, when the main sights are illuminated, gives you a completely different perspective on the city and having a private guide means you can do it at your own pace.
And then there’s the Old Town Hall and Astronomical Clock Tower, which is one of those Prague sights you really should see. Going up the tower gives you a brilliant view across the rooftops and squares below.
Eat and drink very well
A luxury city break always needs great food. Prague has plenty of options beyond traditional Czech fare, and there are some brilliant restaurants worth building a trip around.
Field is a Michelin-starred restaurant offering modern Czech cooking, while Etapa is a great option for brunch if you want something more relaxed.
And then there are the cocktails.
Hemingway Bar is one of the city's best-known cocktail spots and is a lovely place for an evening drink, while Tretter's has that classic cocktail-bar feel and is another one to put on the list.
Prague at Christmas, done beautifully
Prague really doesn’t need much help to look beautiful at Christmas. But I think it’s all about getting the details right.
Choose a hotel you’ll actually enjoy coming back to. Don't spend the entire day fighting your way through the crowds. Book a couple of experiences that you'll remember. Find the good restaurants and bars.
And leave yourself enough time to simply enjoy the city.
Because luxury doesn’t have to mean over the top. Sometimes it’s just about making the right choices.
